SAO PAULO: THE LARGEST CITY IN THE WORLD
“SAO PAULO IS THE TRUE HEART OF BRAZIL, WITH THE GUTS, THE VITALITY AND THE CHARACTER”. LUCIA VAN DER POST – LEADING LUXURY/LIFESTYLE EDITOR
Sao Paolo is a vibrant and energetic city with an abundance of things to see and do. It has some of the country’s most amazing restaurants, galleries, public art museums and boutiques in all of South America.
The largest city in Brazil, it is located on a plateau in the South East of Brazil, a 45 minute flight away from Rio.
Rio gets the accolades for beauty and quite rightly so, but Sao Paulo is where the business happens and Rio has in the last 40 years become a bit of a commercial backwater- Sao Paulo is the place where it is at for any thrusting Brazilian and is a real creative hub……..rather disdainful, in fact, of the lazy hedonism of the Cariocas.
We have shopping guides on hand to explore some of the very exciting fashion houses which are influencing the industry worldwide and cultural guides who can pick off the best permanent collections and temporary exhibitions and so make the best use of time. For soccer fans, we can even take in the stadiums of Sao Paulo and Corinthians and their museums/memorabilia. The Centro Historico and Jardims are the safest and most fashionable districts and are the most interesting for exploring on foot.
Because of aircraft routings, most itineraries take in Sao Paulo and it is worth at least a night or two as a base for exploration and has some world class hotels. And for those with a little longer, the State of Sao Paulo is rich and very beautiful and has become the weekend retreat of Paulistas as have the colonial towns of neighbouring Minas Gerais. As the name suggests these mainly 18th Century cities are built as on the wealth of the gold and iron ore mined in the area- the setting of architectural gems such at Tiradentes and Ouro Preto tight up against the rugged forests and hills is spectacular.
